MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH BOOKS

Wednesday, February 03, 2010

The Carnegie library was on one corner. Emerson elementary school was on the opposite corner. Emerson was my first school. The Carnegie was my first library. I loved them both!

I learned to read at Emerson. I got some of the first books I read from the Carnegie library.

Many years have passed since the first day I walked into the Carnegie library. I have lost count of the number of libraries I have visited over the years.

I love books. I love to hold a book in my hands. I love the feel of the book and the way it smells.

I love to mark in my books, highlight passages and make notes in the margins.

I drool over book catalogs.

Audio books are helpful but they can never substitute for reading.

Some day I may change my mind, but right now I am just not into reading a book on a kindle. It's just not the same as having the actual book in my "sweaty" little hands.

I have many books. I know where they are on the shelves. I rarely lose a book or have difficulty in locating one.

Do you love books? Besides the Bible, tell me the name of one book that you think everybody should read.

We are on the same page Cliff! I think I told you I was raised in Lodi, the old Carngie Library was my favorite place, the new one just wasn't the same! In addition to libraries, now I am getting to know the used bookstores, they are great for cheap books and the inventories are always changing! Jane Eyre captivated me when I first read it, and I love ALL the Mitford books. Grapes of Wrath captures hauntingly a unique time in history of our country. Uncle Tom's Cabin is very painful to read but I think a very important book. Of course you can't beat JRR Tolkien, C.S. Lewis....don't get me started!

I was so blessed to have parents to who'd walk with me to our public library... who fostered my love of books as a child.
Oh, I've taken a second (and third) look at the Kindle, but like you, I'm drawn to the weight, the feel and yes, the smell, of a real book.
Recommendation for a runner-up title? ... Oh, I've got to ponder that one! Off the top of my head, "Simple Abundance", or "Ordinary Miracles" (both by Sarah Ban Breahnach).
Thanks for making me think!

I LOVE books too :) I guess now I have the best of both worlds...I am blessed to receive free books because of reviewing but I also own a Kindle. I love Both! There truly is NO substitute for holding a book in your hand though!! But just like tonight I was looking at getting a book by Beth Moore that has been out for a while and the price was higher than I wanted to pay at walmart so guess what ...I can get it for 4$ less on my kindle but this is definately a book I would want to mark in...so ....what a dilemna ah yi yi :) Dont know what I will do??

I would recommend everyone read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. My honey is reading it (audiobook) now and LOVES it!

So glad everything was ok with your precious Charlotte! Thank you LORD!!!!

I often warn my friends when we got to a bookstore that it may take me while to get out of there. I love books too. What a blessing they can be.

That is a tough question about one book to recommend! I recently re-watched Chariots of Fire and if there was a book version I would recommend that. Tuesday's with Morrie is another. Books by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. I had better stop there.

What about you Clif? I woud love to know your answer.

My hubby is just like you. He loves his books. Yesterday we received in the mail the book you reviewed, My Paper Chase. Alan has already begun reading. He says, "I am going to like this book!" then he proceded to tell me about the author.

Alan said, "Are you going to read this book?" I said, "No, it is too thick." =)

Thank you for making my hubby a happy man. He LOVES books and the thicker the better.

Clif,

I would have to whole-heartily agree with you that nothing compares to the love of reading books. I've always been a huge fan. Now that getting them free to review is so incredible of a gift from God.

My newest recommendation is Love and War by John and Stasi Eldredge. Must read and keep!

Yikes, you write in your books? hahaha I guess we'll never be sharing books. I enjoy sharing my books and my daughters and I pass them around. I typically only write in non-fiction and only do that as a last resort. ;) No dog earring in my books either. If I know I need to make notes to remember, I keep a pad of paper near me. hahahaha

Looking at the books you've reviews, I think you'd really like a book I read a couple years ago called A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken. Beautiful story.

Blessings,

I completely agree with this post. I, too, am a book lover and have MANY books. I cannot get into audio books or reading a book online. I take books with me to appointments and things when I know I will have to spend some time waiting for someone or something because I would much rather read than simply sit and wait for I hate to waste time.

One book I thing everyone should read other than the Bible ... hmmm, that's a hard one -- I think I will have to say Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham, Jr. It is a wealth of wisdom in raising a Godly family.

I love books, too! Real, tangible books :). Besides the Bible, I think everyone should read The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W.Tozer and Revolution in World Missions by K.P.Yohannan. The latter can be obtained for free at http://www.gfa.org .

Clif,
I've been a reader all my life and I also love to hold a book in my hands. I used to take my children to the public library in St.Petersburg, Florida when we lived there in the 70's...it was so cool in there out of the heat of the day...a perfect way to spend a few afternoon hours. I do like books by Joel C. Rosenberg but I think I would have to say, Gone With The Wind is one "must" read.
