THE SIN OF OMISSION

Saturday, November 07, 2009

It isn't the thing you do;
It's the thing you leave undone,
Which gives you a bit of heartache,
At the setting of the sun.

The tender word forgotten,
The letter you did not write,
The flower you might have sent,
Are your haunting ghosts tonight.

The stone you might have lifted
Out of a brother's way,
The bit of heartsome counsel
You were hurried too much to say.

The loving touch of the hand,
The gentle and winsome tone,
That you had no time or thought for
With troubles enough of your own.

The little acts of kindness,
So easily out of mind;
Those chances to be helpful
Which everyone may find--

No, it's not the thing you do,
It's the thing you leave undone,
Which gives you the bit of heartache
At the setting of the sun.

I just picked up a book on religious verse and some of her poetry is in it. Strange coincidence that you should post her as well.

This reminds me of yesterday. I didn't do something I really should have done. Oh, wait, there were two things I should have done. My fears keep me from doing good. I reason, well, I cannot cook all that well. Aaaaaand, I should have stopped and chatted with her but maybe that person was not the person I thought she was because I do not know her that well and after all, all those foreign people all look alike to me. Crazy! Now I am beating myself up for not taking advantage of the opportunities.

Beautiful poem and so true!

This is such a sad poem. I feel frustrated having read it because it says that all the good I do/have done is unimportant; it's only what I have not done that counts. I prefer the "half full glass" way of thinking.

oh how true this is Clif......may we do better each and everyday....may we take nothing for granted and be obedient to the Sprits call!

Thankyou for sharing this....to encourage us that we may lay our heads down knowing "we did not put off until tomorrow" but that we did all we could for TODAY :)

bless you Clif!

This really blessed me tonight. Have a wonderful week. Blessings to you, Debbie

And I was thinking for the woman who posted above, (smiling Sally) it is not that what we do doesn't matter. It is just that those things we don't feel bad about. It is the things we KNOW we should have and done and didn't that weigh us down...I have certainly found this to be so true.

Clif,
Things left undone...that is so sad a thought. We are all guilty of this at one time or another. May we slow down enough to remember to help one another!

Clif, this rings true for me...it home home immediately. Of all the ways I can "sin" in my life, this has to be the greatest areas...too tired, too busy, too scatter-brained, too forgetful...later, when I realize that I could have done the deed, but its too late, leaves me feeling guilty, and with a legitimate guilt...its not just feeling bad, its truly disobedience to the Holy Spirit. He knows what people need, and He lays it on hearts to step up and be His hands and feel...when we don't, we are not honoring Him or His request. We miss giving the blessing, and we miss getting the blessing...that is very sad. For me, it seems like a weakness in my character, and I don't like it at all. Thanks for posting this today...I'm printing it out and reading it daily, as a reminder that I can always do what He calls me to do, if I'm willing.

God bless,

Mary

Yes, Ms. Sanger's words left me feeling a bit uncomfortable ... yet, like the medicine that tastes "yukky" going down, it's GOOD for me.

Thanks for this important prompt!

Have a joyous new week!

Oh, Clif...these are pretty gentle but profound words that we all need to be reminded of. Sometimes, I think that we can focus on parts while leaving out others. Like me, for instance, the line "The gentle and winsome tone" really pronounced itself to me. I have a tendency to get involved with my mind in what I am doing - and am not always very gentle in my tone when interrupted.

Thank you for sharing this - I'm always up for a good poem :)

My husband and I talked about this recently. It's what we didn't do that we will regret, more than what we did.

Thanks for the reminder.

Clife - Great poem! And this line is so true: "No, it's not the thing you do, It's the thing you leave undone" that causes me trouble! Thanks.
