EVIL AND SUFFERING ARE REAL

Saturday, March 13, 2010

(The message in this post is not mine. It is from Randy Alcorn's marvelous book, If God Is Good--Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil.)

Some pantheistic religions, often related to Hinduism, essentially deny the existence of suffering and evil. It's unreal, an illusion.

Others question evil's reality or define it vaguely. Eckhart Tolle comments, "If evil has any reality...it has a relative, not an absolute reality." He relates evil to denying "my intrinsic oneness" with others.

It's hard to imagine how anyone who looks evil in the face can seriously maintain it's not real. One day I sat on a plane next to a young man, an intelligent college graduate, who told me he believed evil doesn't exist.

"If there's no such thing as evil," I said, "then the Holocaust wasn't evil. Is that what you believe?"

He grimaced, then finally, stammering, said,"Well, I guess the Holocaust was a mistake." I suggested to him that in his heart he must know it was something far worse.

Some worldviews, including Christian Science, argue that suffering doesn't exist. The irrationality of this worldview is illustrated by a boy who visits his family's Christian Science practitioner to ask him to pray for his very sick father. The practitioner replies, "Son, your father only thinks he's sick. Tell him to have faith and believe he's not sick, but well."

The boy did so. The practitioner sees him the next day and asks, "How's your father?"

The boy answers, "Now he thinks he's dead."

(Randy Alcorn delves deep into a profound subject, and through compelling stories, provocative questions and answers, and keen biblical understanding, he brings assurance and hope to all.)

I have to say I really wonder at the faith people would have to have to actually believe something like this. It is sad really, though the remark "Now he thinks he's dead" made me laugh aloud. It is really just that ridiculous. Obviously evil is VERY real and we fight a VERY REAL spiritual battle everyday as well rather we are aware of it or not. I think Satan loves it when we think there is no real evil or no real battle. Thanks for sharing this. Have a great week-end. Blessings, Debbie

I don't know how evil can be denied when we see the results of it every day in too many ways. This is the second time today I have read about this author :) I have not heard of him before so must look him up! God bless.

Good post Clif. I don't understand how some people can think evil doesn't exist.

I'm so saddened for those who think they "know better" ... who, perhaps, have been brainwashed by their own parents. It's so important to hold them tight in our prayers!

Hi Clif !!
Very interesting post today, I can't imagine someone thinking there is no evil and than calls evil a mistake instead. It's so evident on how real evil is.. The our Father says...
And deliver us from all evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen!! Thanks for sharing this post, I enjoyed reading it today.

Blessings Lorie

I don't understand how anyone can experience life and not witness evil and suffering. Randy Alcorn is an amazing writer/thinker.

isn't it amazing what people will deny in order to never have to believe God is real?

I agree with what micey said...people will say anything to deny the spiritual presence of God and then of the battle we're engaged in..

It saddens me to think how many people may believe this way. It saddens me to think how many people have lost the lives of their loved ones because of Christian Science. The way some people believe is so scary to me.
Thank-you

Hi Clif,

I find it very disturbing when I realize that there are people with very different thinking than mine. We believe everyone thinks as like us, but minds are a funny thing...there are those that are bent in strange ways that we don't understand. Perhaps that is a result of evil control, I don't know, but it is very real. I'm really glad to see a book that deals with this...we need to know of the spiritual battles that are going on around us, and not pretend that they don't exist.

I liked your previous post as well, especially that God is our Father and not an indulgent grandfather, and not letting us go...He never does, never.

Always love visiting your blog...so filled with good things. Have a wonderful Sunday!

God bless,

Mary

I wish evil and suffering didn't exist, but I know firsthand through my job and myself personally that it does.

Thank you for sharing this post with us. May God richly bless you today and every day!

This shows how vague ,relativistic thinking has invaded our society. The belief That there are no absolutes .It is a lie form the devil , but people believe such because they choose to .We have the truth so available to us in America . Pray for America , we need revival!

thank you for sharing this, how can anyone see the ravages of genocide and man's inhumanity to man and not believe that evil exists.
